Tips For Packing Your Slides Before Sending Them to a Slide Scanning ServiceWe’re not talking about slides like in the picture to the right… but we think you can have this much fun with your photographic slides too!

Regardless of whether you have large format, medium format, 35mm, or 127 format slides, you can convert them to digital. Afterwards you'll have the opportunity to share your digital photos in countless ways.

Think of the accomplishment you’ll feel once your slides are organized and on their way to being digitized by a slide scanning service.

Tips For Packing Your Slides Before Sending Them to a Slide Scanning Service

1. Remove slides from carousels or slide pages.

  • This allows for effective organization, safety, and efficient shipping. However, prior to packing, we suggest you determine if image file sequence and ordering are important on the media (DVD/CD/Mobile Drive, etc.) you receive from your slide scanning service.

  • Keep in mind, once you receive your newly digitized photos you can copy them to your computer, make multiple back-up copies and rename, re-sort, and reorganize your digital images.

  • Some slide scanning services, like FotoBridge, now offer new slide tray and carousel services. FotoBridge removes your slides, scans them, and returns both the slides and carousels (separately) with your new digital images.

2. Group in stacks and secure in zip lock bags or in plastic wrap.

  • If image sequence is important, organize your slides in groups of 50 to 100 and assign a value and/or a short description to each group. Tagging these groups and indicating a start slide (or "top") for each group is all that's required.

  • Slide boxes or magazines can be sent using zip lock bags and rubber bands.

  • If you are sending slides in carousels, keep in the original boxes and pack tightly in larger boxes while protecting them from moisture with a single layer of bubble wrap or plastic inside the shipping box.

3. Ship slides to your selected slide scanning service.

  • Conveniently, nearly all the 3rd party secure shippers (FedEx, UPS) offer free pickup services and will even deliver envelopes and packaging to your home or office location.
