How-to-back-up-photosYou may not always remember every detail from 10 years ago but if you have a digital photo back up plan you will be able to rest easy. Backing up your digital photos is one of the most important things you can do to preserve these memories. Each photo is equally important because they each represent a precious moment frozen in time. Digital copies protect them from being lost due to any kind of disaster striking - whether it be a natural disaster or a computer failure. Although backing up photos on your own can be tedious, there are online services that create automatic back ups and digital copies - saving you both time and the trouble of remembering to create backups.

How to Back Up Photos

1. Storage Devices

The simplest method is to purchase storage mediums that can be used to hold the backups. This can be as simple as purchasing DVDs, making digital duplicates of your photos and moving the duplicates over to the DVDs then updating them on a regular basis. There are also a number of devices you could purchase to make this an easier process. For example, Picture Keeper produces a range of storage devices that automate the backup process.

2. Photo Hosting Sites

There are many photo storage sites to choose from. Websites we recommend checking out include Smugmug, Zenfolio, and a good number of social media sites - Facebook, Instagram, etc. There are also a bunch of apps that can be used to host photos. Linea is designed to help its users print photo books from iPAD and you can also store your photos there for free.

3. Cloud Backup

Cloud-based backup sites have become more popular, not only because they are more secure due to their redundant servers, but also because they come with tools to automate the backup process. You can upload your files to the sites, have them updated on a regular basis, and retrieve them through the Internet using any device so long as you have a reliable connection. We really like Carbonite and Mozy.

4. Digital Copies

When you send your printed photos to a photo scanning service, like FotoBridge, you can request extra disc copies. These can be stored in places outside of your home like a safety deposity box, a storage unit, or with other family members. Extra disc copies are not considered covnentional digital photo back up but can provide additional peace of mind.

Backing up photos in at least one way prevents them from being lost due to circumstances out of your control. You'll be able to enjoy your photos for years to come!
